K-Electric Responds Swiftly as Monsoon Rains Hit Karachi
Rapid Restoration and Public Safety Emphasized During First Rain Spell
Karachi, June 29, 2025 – As the first spell of monsoon rainfall swept across Karachi over the past three days, K-Electric field teams remained fully mobilized across the city, working around the clock to ensure timely power restoration and safeguard public safety.
While more than 2,100 of K-Electric’s feeders remained stable throughout the rain spell, isolated outages were reported in certain areas. These were primarily caused by illegal connections, disregard for safety protocols, and added strain on localized infrastructure. Despite the challenging weather, K-Electric teams were swiftly dispatched to address each issue.
Restoration efforts were prioritized at vital water pumping stations, including Dhabeji and North East Karachi (NEK) old pumping station, both of which support water supply to key parts of the city. While NEK II and III remained fully operational, a fault at the consumer side of the NEK old station temporarily disrupted water distribution. K-Electric teams were immediately deployed to carry out repairs, restoring operations. At Dhabeji, waterlogging created access challenges for maintenance crews, though efforts continued without delay.
A spokesperson for K-Electric expressed condolences over the safety-related incidents reported during the rain. It was clarified that five of these incidents had no connection to K-Electric’s infrastructure. Two cases involved illegal tampering, including an accident in Korangi 32-B where an individual working inside a consumer’s premises was electrocuted while repairing a water motor.
Other incidents in SITE Area, Surjani Town, and New Karachi 11J were traced to faulty internal wiring within consumer properties. In Manghopir, no current leakage from K-Electric’s system was detected. Meanwhile, in Korangi Sector 9, an illegal shift of a service bracket inside an under-construction building led to a tragic accident. A separate incident in Clifton Block 5 occurred when an attempted cable theft damaged an underground feeder pillar and cable, leading to power disruption.
An incident in Lyari is still under investigation. Preliminary findings, however, indicate no link to K-Electric infrastructure.
K-Electric continues to urge the public to maintain a safe distance from all electrical infrastructure, especially during rains, and to report any unsafe conditions by calling 118 or via WhatsApp. Safety messages and precautions have also been shared through K-Electric’s official social media platforms.
“As monsoon activity continues, ensuring public safety requires both operational vigilance and citizen responsibility,” said Imran Rana, Spokesperson for K-Electric. “Strict adherence to safety guidelines and timely coordination between utilities and civic agencies are key to minimizing risk and maintaining city-wide resilience.”
